The History of Poi

Brief History on the Art of Poi:

Poi can be traced back to the Maori people of New Zealand, it dates as far back as 900-1200’s. The actual product is called Poi. It literally means ball on string. It was usually constructed with various string and used in a manor for dancing, and most often female. The poi dance was essentially used for hand flexibility and men for coordination in battle. Poi is also a training aid for many other weapons.

Modern poi is used in many various ways and styles and so many spinning arts have been made and used. All is usually all evolved around dance. Now there are various subcultures with in poi and other styles like, staff, double staff, swords, chains, nun chucks, LED poi, just to name a few and all of these can be used with fire, example, fire poi.
